Three Reasons Women Lose Their Hair and What You Can Do to Stop It

by April Maguire

If you're over the age of 40, then chances are you've probably noticed some changes with your hair. We can turn a blind eye and pretend that baldness is a problem that only men face, but that doesn't change the facts. By the age of 40, more than a third of women notice that their hair is thinning. By the age of 50, that number jumps up to nearly 50%.

So what accounts for female hair loss? Unfortunately, there isn't a single underlying cause. But whether your hair is becoming more breakable or you're noticing thinning around your scalp, rest assured that there is root cause – no pun intended. And the best part is that you can probably do something to fix it.

If you don't take proper care of your body, then you're going to pay the price, and that price may be saying good-bye to your lustrous, beautiful hair. Constantly living with a high amount of stress or acute stressful events can cause changes in your body that can be disastrous for you hair. So make sure you take time each and every day to relax and distress.

Changes to Hormones

The systems within your body are more delicate than you may think, and simple hormonal changes to wreak havoc on your lovely locks. Something as small as switching birth control can lead to hair shedding for a short period of time. Similarly, becoming pregnant or going through menopause can also alter your hormonal levels enough to damage your hair. So if you've noticed that your hair is changing, see if changes to your hormones could be the culprit.

Bad Genes

Right or wrong, you probably blame your parents for some of your problems in life, but when it comes to hair loss, you may be totally justified. According to experts, the vast majority of hair loss in both men and women is due to androgenetic alopecia, a genetic condition that causes your hair to fall out as you age. Commonly, this condition is known as "male-pattern baldness," but it happens to women as well. If your hair loss is due to faulty genetics, then a topical treatment like minoxidil (Rogaine) can provide some relief.

Even though hair loss is incredibly common, it's almost impossible to treat unless you can determine the underlying cause. So if you've noticed more hair resting on the drain of your shower, take a look at your lifestyle habits to see if you can find the reason for your hair loss. Also, it's a good idea to schedule an appointment with your primary care provider to enlist their help in finding a solution.
