Beat Breakage and Vamp Up the Volume with These Hair Healthy Foods

by April Maguire

For most of us, maintaining a luxurious, healthy head of hair can be difficult. A lot of people shell out big bucks for high-end shampoos, conditioners and masks to help elevate their dry, unhealthy hair. While there’s nothing wrong with this approach, it’s important to remember that what you put in your body matters just as much, if not more, than what you put on your hair.

So instead of heading to the beauty store to pick up the latest go-to hair treatment, head to the grocery store instead and pick up a few products that can help to give you a healthy, full head of hair from the inside-out.

Using Iron to Battle Baldness

One of the best ways to keep your hair from falling out is to give it plenty of the vitamins it needs to grow. Iron is an essential component of hair, so make sure that you have plenty of it in your diet. An easy way to increase your iron intake is to eat protein every day. You’ll get high doses of iron from red meats, but you can also get a sufficient amount from lean meats, such as poultry. And for you vegetarians out there, dark leafy greens, such as kale, as well as iron-fortified cereals are perfectly viable meat alternatives.

Getting That Salmon Shine

Once you have a nice, thick head of hair, it’s important to give it that healthy glow. A great way to add some shine to your hair is to eat fish, such as salmon, which is packed with omega-3 fatty acids. Eating this type of healthy fat can give your hair a natural boost of shine. If you’re not a fish person, however, you can grab some carrots, squash, sweet potatoes or any other food that is high in beta-carotene and achieve similar shiny results.

Fighting Breakage With Vitamins

If you’ve got longer hair, then you’re probably in a constant battle against breakage. In order to strengthen your hair and keep it from breaking, make sure to eat plenty of leafy greens, such as spinach, as well as fruits like cantaloupes, pineapples and nectarines in order to fortify your locks and keep them from snapping.

Keeping your hair healthy starts from the inside out. So the next time you head to the grocery store, do your hair a favor, and keep some of these foods in mind. Adding them to your weekly meal plan could give your hair a much-needed boost.
