4 Unexpected Causes of Hair Loss

Women start to lose their hair as they get older, just as men do. For the majority of women, this thinning and loss begins once they reach their 40s and 50s, although there are some women who start to experience the first signs of baldness as early as their 20s. By far the biggest contributor to hair loss is genetics, but that in no way accounts for all of the baldness and thinning that women experience. In fact, female hair loss has a number of surprising causes, and you may be unwittingly making it worse.

Dietary Insufficiencies

Your body needs the proper nutrition to thrive, and that goes for your hair too. Without the proper vitamins and minerals, your hair strands will weaken, causing it to break easily or grow at a slower rate. In order to give your hair the nutrition that it needs, make sure that you maintain an iron-rich diet, as this is one of the primary building blocks of healthy hair. Also, it's important that you get enough daily protein, which will also promote hair growth.

Damaging Styling Practices

In an effort to make your hair look perfect, you may be causing it undue harm. For example, subjecting your lovely locks to the high heat of blow dryers and straighteners can severely dry out the strands, making them more breakable. Moreover, routinely wearing your hair in styles that pull the hair taut, such as tight ponytails or weighing your hair down with extensions, can damage the follicles and inhibit the formation of new hairs.

High Levels of Stress

Prolonged periods of stress can wreak havoc on your hair. High levels of stress can throw off your metabolism, reduce your body's ability to take in nutrients and cause an uptick in testosterone levels, all of which result in hair shedding. Therefore, it's important to take time to destress every day, either through relaxing exercise or by sitting in a quiet room and giving your mind a rest.

Untreated Disorders

Sometimes hair loss can be a side effect of a more serious problem with your body. For example, a thyroid imbalance can throw off your body's internal system, resulting in hair loss. Also autoimmune diseases can trigger a condition known as alopecia areata, wherein the immune system mistakenly begins attacking perfectly healthy hair follicles. If these disorders continue to go untreated, then your hair loss will continue to get worse.
