Can You Stop Your Eyebrows From Shedding?

by April Maguire

Hair loss is a natural part of the aging process. While seeing hair accumulating in your shower drain or resting on your pillow in the morning may be upsetting, for most of us, it's not entirely unexpected. What can be alarming, however, is noticing that you're starting to lose hair in your eyebrows. Is hair loss in your eyebrow region normal? And is there any way to reverse eyebrow shedding once it has begun?

A Natural Part of the Process

Even though the sight of your eyebrow hair falling out may be distressing, experts are quick to caution that it's a natural part of the body's hair renewal process. Just like the hairs on your head, the hairs that make up your eyebrows grow through various phases of shedding and regrowth. In fact, it's quite common to lose several eyebrow hairs every single day. In the vast majority of cases, the hairs that fall out will quickly be replaced by new ones.

Damage Can Take Its Toll

Despite the fact that eyebrow shedding is perfectly normal, the follicles in your eyebrows are not immune from damage. Common practices such as waxing and tweezing, especially in excess, can damage the follicles to the point that they stop growing new hairs. Additionally, another factor such as stress and rapid weight loss can also cause your eyebrow hairs to fall out at a faster pace. So if you're noticing a severe amount of thinning in your eyebrow region, take stock of your daily activities and see if you could be unintentionally contributing to it in some way.

Can Eyebrow Shedding Be Stopped?

If you're worried that the hair loss in your eyebrows is becoming noticeable, there are products on the market to help correct it. General growth stimulators, such as Rogaine and Viviscal can be used to increase the fullness of your eyebrows. If you're thinking of using a hair growth product, however, just remember that different people can see wildly different results. Even if a product worked for a friend of yours, that isn't a guarantee that it will work for you, and even if it does, it may take a while to see results.

Ultimately, if you're proactive, you should be able to curb hair loss in your eyebrows. If lifestyle changes and hair growth products don't improve the situation, however, you may have a more serious problem on your hands, such as dangerous hormonal changes or an autoimmune disease. So if your eyebrow shedding becomes severe, you'll want to consult with a doctor.
