Plugs (Hair Plugs)
Hair plugs have been the most heavily associated haur restoration surgery for the past 50 years. Originally created by a dermatologist in the 1950’s, hair plugs are essentially grafts consisting of 10-50 hairs each. Hair Plugs are rarely used anymore, in fact, it would be difficult to find a hair transplant doctor anywhere in the country that uses hairplugs. The more popular method of hair restoration surgery is the follicular unit hair transplant. The follicular unit graft was actually invented before the hair plug took off.
Hair plug surgery become extremely popular in the 70’s and 80’s, but often resulted in the doll hair look. This is because the donor hair removed for hair plugs are extracted with large punches. This type of hair grouping results in a unnatural look with unmanageable hairstyles. Follicular transplants breaks the hair down into the more natural groupings of 2 to 4 hairs. Large hair plugs also use up the viable donor hair faster than other hair transplantations, making it possible to run out of hair grafts before the receding hairline is restored.
Celebrities associated with hair plug surgery include Mathew McConaughey, Brendan Fraser, Tom Cruise, and Senator Joe Biden. However, these are simply Hollywood hair plug rumors, and considering how well the surgeries turned out, are most likely follicular unit transplants and not hairplugs at all.
