Laser Hair Restoration

There are two types of laser hair restoration options: Laser Hair Therapy and Laser Hair Transplantation. Laser Hair Transplantation is a hair graft procedure using lasers as surgical tool instead of a traditional scalpel. A laser simply creates the holes or slits for the new hair grafts to be inserted into. Currently none of the top hair surgeons use lasers for hair transplant surgery, and in general, it is considered inferior to follicular unit graft procedures. Lasers grafts are considered to be a “bloodless surgery,” however, this can have negative results in hair restoration surgery. Hair transplants thrive through a process called oxygenation, which requires a steady flow of blood. Reduced blood flow, as is the case with Laser Hair Transplants, causes a situation where new hair grafts do not grow in as well.

Laser Hair Therapy, however, is beginning to be used more and more in conjunction with traditional hair restoration surgery. This process uses low intensity light to stimulate hair growth. While, hair restoration with lasers sees little in terms of regrowth, lasers have been proven to thicken and strengthen hair. Hair transplant surgeons now use laser technology to help follicular transplants to grow fuller and thicker. The latest breakthrough in laser hair restoration is the laser comb, which allows patients to treat their new hair transplants with laser energy in the privacy of their own homes.
