Hair Plugs

Hair plugs have been used to treat baldness as early as the late 1950’s. Hair transplant surgeons theorized that donor hair would retain its dominance in balding areas and thrive, creating hair that would last a lifetime. However, these grafts were rather large, 2-4 mm, and consisted of 10-50 hairs each. This was due to the fact that creating hair plugs was a rather clumsy process and required large punches to create the grafts. With hair plugs not only were the grafts too large to look natural, but valuable donor hair was wasted in the extraction process. As hair transplant surgery began to thrive in the 60’s and 70’s, people began to notice that these large grafts created an appearance similar to doll hair, or a “plugged” look. This is because there are too many hairs in the graft and not enough grafts to provide sufficient coverage.

Hair plugs are rarely used nowadays, in fact, it would be difficult to find a hair transplant doctor anywhere in the country that uses hair plugs. Most hair transplantations are carried out with Follicular Unit Transplantations, this type of hair transplant uses smaller micrografts that can achieve a much more natural look than hair plugs.
