What are follicular units and micro grafts?

Follicular units and micro grafts are the terms used to describe the individual sections of donor hair that are transplanted to balding areas. Most follicular units contain 3-5 hairs. When follicular units are combined and transplanted together, they are referred to as a follicular family unit. Some situations call for a micro graft, which is a section of 3 or less hairs — not quite a complete follicular unit.

Precise transferring of appropriately-sized follicular units is very important to the success of surgical hair transplantation. Our hair naturally grows in irregular patterns, so to avoid an unnatural result, these patterns must be respected during the transplant process.
