Hair Transplant Repair

Hair restoration has proven to be a highly-effective solution to hair loss, leaving patients with a natural look. However, the men and women who underwent hair transplantation in the early years—when it was still in its initial stages—were left with hairlines that don’t live up to the aesthetic standards of today’s treatments. For those who still have those plugs, there is a way to upgrade. Hair transplant repair is a procedure that many hair loss specialists perform for patients who want to fix their old transplants.

Types of Hair Transplant Repair

Hair transplant repair is not only used to improve the appearance of old-plug procedures, but also to fix poorly executed hair transplants and hide scarring from previous surgeries. There are a few hair transplant repair techniques that specialists can use.

Camouflage or Masking: This is the most basic hair transplant repair technique. It involves the insertion of small follicular units, or micrografts, in front of the larger grafts to hide them; this creates a softer, natural-looking hairline. This method can be a stand-alone procedure and is very effective on grafts that are centrally located and have hair pointed in the forward direction. Camouflaging can also be combined with other methods, especially since a majority of the time old transplants require more work to get the desired look.

Graft Excision: The old-fashioned hair grafts that were used years ago were extremely large, and often placed in the wrong direction, giving the patients a row of hair that looked manufactured. Graft excision is a hair transplant repair technique that extracts the old grafts from the scalp, removing them completely. An important part of this process is stitching the holes left from the removed grafts, making sure they are properly closed up so that skin will heal nicely. Graft excision is commonly used when patients want a reverse transplant, placing the grafts back into the area of the scalp where they originated from. However, this process is generally performed along with another repair procedure.

Combined Repair: This technique is also referred to as plug reduction and recycling. Combined hair transplant repair requires the use of both graft excision and camouflage. This is one of the most frequently performed repair surgeries, because it generates some of the best results. After old grafts are extracted, they are dissected into individual follicular units that are then re-implanted back into the scalp in a central location. Then the camouflage method is utilized, where additional hair is taken from either a donor strip or the back of the patient’s head and placed along the hairline and add coverage to the scalp.

Fixing Scars: Hair transplant repair is not delegated to just fixing old grafts, it can be used to cover up unsightly scars leftover from previous surgeries. The most common way to reduce the appearance of scars is to use the camouflage method to insert follicular units directly into the scar tissue.

How Much Does Hair Transplant Repair Cost?

The price for hair transplant repair will vary with each region and specialist. Usually doctors will charge a certain amount for each graft that is extracted, but this fee will depend on the experience of the doctor and where they are located. The cost will also differ based on the number of grafts that need to be removed and how many extra follicular units need to be added to the hairline. The cost of hair transplant repair usually runs about $85 per graft, but, again, this number will fluctuate between surgeons.
