Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) occurs when individual hair grafts are removed directly from the donor, using a one millimeter punch and forceps, without removing a linear strip. While scarring from FUE is much less noticeable than the obvious scars seen after using a strip technique, FUE does take longer, yields less donor hair and often requires repeat sessions. However, patients who undergo FUE do not experience any scalp tightness and have the benefit of returning to their normal physical activities immediately following surgery.... Read More

Recent Q&A about this Treatment

Q:
What happens after you fill in a hair loss area and years later the hair line behind it begins to experience hair loss? I can see having a stripe or patch of hair loss. Your thoughts
S. F., White Plains, NY
A:
Hair loss is a progressive condition. Having a hair transplant does not mean that the loss of your remaining native hair will be arrested. Though transplanted hair is permanent, hair transplantation is not a hair loss cure. Because future hair loss is possible, subsequent hair restoration procedures may be necessary. This is why it is extremely important to work with a doctor who will help you plan for the long term. You should avoid hasty decisions. If you are likely to continue losing your hair, you should weigh your options before having a hair transplant right away. Research and planning is key to successful hair transplants.

FUE Hair Transplant Information:

Hair loss specialists traditionally use follicular unit transplantation (FUT), taking a linear strip of donor hair from the back of the patient’s head using microscopic lenses. Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) occurs when individual hair grafts are removed directly from the donor, using a one millimeter punch and forceps, without removing a linear strip.

Most surgeons charge per unit graft for an FUE transplant, charging between three and 10 dollars for each graft, and therefore, the total cost often ranges from 10,000 to 15,000 dollars. Each surgeon is different and costs often vary based on individual pricing and skill level.

While scarring from FUE is much less noticeable than the obvious scars seen after using a strip technique, FUE does take longer, yields less donor hair and often requires repeat sessions. However, patients who undergo FUE do not experience any scalp tightness and have the benefit of returning to their normal physical activities immediately following surgery.

AccuGraft Hair Transplant
The automated AccuGraft uses air pressure to remove and implant individual hair follicles safely and painlessly. A trained hair loss specialist then uses a dexterous and precise hand tool to reintroduce the follicles into the patient’s bald or balding areas of the scalp. AccuGraft yields up to 2,000 follicles per session while minimizing pain and bleeding, eliminating the risk of nerve damage and reducing scarring.

ARTAS Hair Transplant
Approved for men with androgenetic alopecia (male pattern hair loss) and black or brown hair, ARTAS electronically identifies and extracts hair follicles using a small dermal punch. The ARTAS System uses trusted hair restoration techniques with precision, improving follicular unit extraction (FUE) and eliminating technological mishaps that often occur during total manual hair transplantation.

Hair Transplant Surgery
A simple matter of hair distribution, hair transplant surgery begins with extracting donor hair, located at the sides and back of the patient’s head. A trained hair loss specialist will keep scarring to a minimum and undetectable while maximizing hair growth, ensuring naturalness and minimizing trauma to the scalp.
