Can Genetics Cause Female Hair Loss?

Female hair loss sufferers have more hair restoration treatment choices available today than ever before! Aside from female hair transplant surgery for advanced female hair loss, there is laser hair restoration, specially formulated female hair loss products, and even hair loss medications like Rogaine for women.

In spite of these advancements, there is still much to learn in terms of female hair loss causes, female hair loss prevention and female hair restoration overall. But according to the results of a new HairDX study, unlocking the mechanism and mystery of genetic female hair loss may be closer than we think!

HairDX Female Hair Loss Findings

The research team at HairDX, a molecular dermatology research and innovation group, recently released a 6-month pilot study that is purported to give "evidence that genetic mechanisms may predict treatment response to Finasteride" for post-menopausal female hair loss patients.

HairDX's double-blinded placebo study tracked a small group of female androgenetic alopecia sufferers for 6 months. According to a HairDX press release, the study findings "were able to identify women that benefited from Finasteride (Propecia) by experiencing a significant increase in hair counts".

The Chief Medical Officer of HairDX, Dr. Sharon Keene, stated that the study has identified "women who can benefit from Finasteride therapy". Women of childbearing age have always been unable to use Propecia since it's been linked to birth defects in female users. This is unfortunate, since Finasteride or Propecia has yielded some excellent hair restoration results for male hair loss patients. Which is why HairDX wanted to test Propecia's efficacy on postmenopausal female patients.

HairDX and Dr. Keene also claimed the findings suggest "these women actually have a female corollary to male pattern hair loss". They are confident that the study results could mean a "new era of treatment for female androgenetic alopecia".

Current Female Hair Loss Treatments

As indicated in the beginning, female hair loss treatments have quite a few treatment options available today. If you are a pre-menopausal female hair loss patient, and can't use Propecia, other useful treatments include Rogaine (Minoxidil) or laser hair restoration. For females who are experiencing the advanced stages of hair loss, and need a more intensive hair loss treatment, hair transplant surgery may be the answer!

To learn more about your hair restoration options, or to identify which level or type of hair loss you're dealing with, it's best to consult with a licensed hair loss specialist near you. They will give you an extensive hair and scalp analysis, and ask you specific questions about your hair loss condition to make the best possible treatment recommendations!
